House, Senate Back in Session; Fed Government Funding is (Again) on the Agenda

WASHINGTON—With the funding of the federal government back on the agenda once again, both the House and Senate are back in session this week, with the Senate postponing a one-week recess to instead try to vote on several key pieces of legislation, while the CU focus will be on at least one hearing set to be held.

The Senate is expected to vote today on election and voting legislation—including the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act—and could consider the chamber’s filibuster rules as the Democrats seek ways to advance their agenda.

Wednesday, the House Financial Services Committee will hold a hearing on Ensuring Equitable Delivery of Disaster Benefits to Vulnerable Communities and Peoples.

On Thursday the House Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee will hold a hearing to examine the energy impacts of cryptocurrency, while the House Agricultural Committee will hold a hearing to review the state of the rural economy with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. CUNA’s Jason Stverak, deputy chief advocacy officer, said the trade association will be closely watching this session.

Funding the Government

As the expiration of the continuing resolution to fund the government, passed Dec. 2, steadily approaches next month, much is still up in the air as to what Congress will do next. Members from both chambers say they are getting closer to a deal in setting the spending number for an appropriations package to fund the government and avoid a shutdown on Feb. 18, NAFCU noted.
