WASHINGTON–The House and the Senate are both back in session this week and, not surprisingly, nearly all of the attention in the new Congress will be on whether a
way forward can be found on the partial federal shutdown.
The House will consider a number of bills under suspension of rules as it seeks a compromise on President Trump’s and the Republicans’ demands for funding for a wall along the Mexican border, and Democrats’ opposition to providing such funding.
The Senate is in much the same position, although it does have unrelated legislation on its agenda.
There are no committee hearings scheduled for the week.
Instead, noted Ryan Donovan, CUNA’s chief advocacy officer, later this week which members of Congress will serve on which committees should be finalized. That includes the House Financial Services Committee; should any members exit that committee they will likely head to Ways & Means, he said.
