House Passes Clean NDAA, But…

WASHINGTON—The House of Representatives has passed the FY 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) by a 281 to 140 vote.

The bill – free of amendments harmful for credit unions – now awaits passage in the Senate which is expected in the coming days, America’s Credit Unions reported.

The NDAA authorizes the annual budget and expenditures of the Department of Defense and is passed annually.

Defense Credit Union Council Chief Advocacy Officer Jason Stverak said DCUC is pleased to see the House pass a clean NDAA.

“But we have been told to expect Senators (Richard) Durbin (D-IL) and (Roger) Marshall (R-KS)  to offer their bill as an amendment in the Senate. That’s why we have not stopped our efforts to prevent this legislative text from being airdropped into the bill at the last minute,” Stverak said. “We are also happy to see the House didn’t make any changes to the Federal Credit Union Act, allowing non-members to get share insurance coverage. We have been adamantly opposed to this effort from the beginning and happy to see the rest of the industry and Congress agree with our position. We will not stop advocating on behalf of our members and all credit unions until the bill is signed into law by the President.”

The Senate is expected to take up and clear the bill to the President for his signature in the coming days.
