WASHINGTON–Credit unions are backing candidates in one primary this week as well as primary run-off elections in two states.
In Maine, the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC) and the Maine league are backing the three incumbents in their races, including Republican Sen. Susan Collins and its two House members, both Democrats, Rep. Chellie Pingree and Rep. Jared Golden.
In Alabama, CUNA’s VP of Political Affairs Trey Hawkins said CULAC and the League of Southeastern Credit Unions are supporting Jerry Carl over Bill Hightower in the Republican primary in the first district, and in the second district have put their support behind Jeff Coleman over Gary Moore in that Republican primary.
Meanwhile, in Texas, where there are a number of runoffs taking place, credit unions are involved in two races, both solidly Republican districts. In Texas 13, credit unions are supporting Josh Winegardner over rival Ronny Jackson, while in Texas 17, CUs are supporting former Rep. Pete Sessions (R), whose lost following a redistricting.
“Congressman Pete Sessions was a strong champion of credit unions while in the Congress,” said Hawkins.
