Here’s Where CUNA is Focused With Congress in Recess

WASHINGTON—With the House and Senate both adjourned for their August recess in-district work period, CUNA is encouraging CUs to engage with policymakers this month, outlining key priorities.

CUNA Chief Advocacy Officer Ryan Donovan said those chief priorities include:

  • Opposition to provision 2821 of the Senate version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2020. The provision, which is not in the House version, would expand certain waivers for rent and other facilities costs for financial institutions on military installations currently granted to credit unions. The House and Senate have both passed versions of the NDAA, and it will go to conference committee in September.
  • Support for the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act (H.R. 1595/S. 2100). The bill would allow financial institutions to serve legal cannabis-based businesses.
  • Passing legislation so all industries must protect consumer data and privacy. CUNA added that it supports legislation that imposes data security requirements on any entity that handles consumers’ personal information.
