Here’s What CUs Are Watching In Washington This Week

WASHINGTON–While the House remains adjourned, the Senate is in session this week and will be considering several bills and holding a number of hearings of interest to credit unions.

Legislation up for consideration includes the $177.1 billion fiscal 2019 bill to fund the departments of Labor, Education, and Health and Human Services.

Among the hearings CUs will be watching are:

  • Today, a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions subcommittee will review how financial literacy is a starting point for a secure retirement.
  • Also today, the Senate Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism will hold a hearing titled, “Cyber Threats to Our Nation’s Critical Infrastructure.”
  • On Thursday, the Senate Banking Committee is expected to vote on the nomination of Kathy Kraninger to lead the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection. Kraninger would succeed acting director Mick Mulvaney and, if approved, is expected to follow the same deregulatory path. Her nomination has the support of credit unions.
