WASHINGTON–Credit union-backed candidates went two-for-four in yesterday's primaries, while a man familiar to many in CUs won his race in Ohio.
In the two congressional races in North Carolina in which credit unions were involved, CUs won one and lost one. Rep. Walter Jones won the GOP primary for House District 3, while incumbent Rep. Robert Pittenger lost to challenger Mark Harris. CUNA and the Carolinas Credit Union League reported they had joined with five credit unions in a campaign targeting more than 28,000 credit union households with mailers across the two districts in support of Jones and Pittenger.
In other races:
- In Indiana’s 6thdistrict, Greg Pence, brother of Vice President Mike Pence, won the Republican primary. Pence has been forecast as the likely winner in the general elections later this year for the House seat vacated by Rep. Luke Messer (R), who is running for the Senate. Pence had the support of credit unions.
- In the GOP primary in West Virginia, the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC) and the West Virginia Credit Union League backed Conrad Lucas for a seat representing House District 3, but Lucas finished fourth in the race.
- In Ohio, a name familiar to most in credit unions, Richard Cordray, won the Democratic primary for governor by a wide margin. Cordray is the former executive director of the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection who resigned the position to join the race and allowing President Trump to appoint Mick Mulvaney to the post. Cordray will face off in November against Republican candidate Mike DeWine, who also won his primary by a wide margin.
