Here are the December Congressional Hearings to be Watching; NY CUs Praise New Democratic Leader

WASHINGTON—The House Financial Services Committee has announced its December hearing schedule, with several items of note for credit unions on the docket, according to NAFCU.

As the 117th Congress heads into its final three weeks, and with the credit union focus on several pieces of legislation that include the National Defense Authorization Act, the December schedule includes:

  • Today, the full Committee will convene for a hybrid hearing on the need for investments in fair and affordable housing to combat inflation
  • Dec. 6, the Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion will convene for a hybrid hearing on economic inclusion
  • Dec. 6, the Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship, and Capital Markets will convene for a hybrid hearing entitled, “E, S, G and W: Examining Private Sector Disclosure of Workforce Management, Investment, and Diversity Data”
  • Dec. 7, the Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations will convene for a hybrid hearing on the role of financial institutions in slavery
  • Dec. 13, the full Committee will convene for a hybrid hearing to investigate the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX and the broader consequences to for the digital asset ecosystem
  • Dec. 14, the full Committee will hear from CFPB Director Rohit Chopra as part of the Bureau’s semi-annual report to Congress

Separately, following the election of U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who represents New York state’s 8th District, to succeed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as Democratic leader of the House of Representatives, New York Credit Union Association President/CEO William J. Mellin had praise for the  new leader.
