Here are the Capitol Hill Hearings Credit Unions Are Watching This Week

WASHINGTON–With a short week in Washington and the July 4 recess approaching, credit unions’ attention will primarily be on Capitol Hill hearings this week.

While not directly related to credit unions, CUNA’s chief advocacy officer for federal government affairs, Jason Stverak, noted the Senate Banking Committee will be marking up the FEND Off Fentanyl Act and one other piece of legislation beginning today, the first such mark-up by the committee since 2017.

“We’re looking forward to their continued commitment to getting back to regular order,” said Stverak, a reference to following strict  processes for moving legislation.

NAFCU VP-Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler pointed out the mark-up deserves attention for another reason, as Senate Banking Committee rules  allow for just about any topic under the purview of the committee to be added as an amendment, and more than 50 such amendments have been filed to date.

Meanwhile, Stverak said CUNA will also be watching these hearings:

Today

  • House Financial Services Committee: The Federal Reserve’s Semi-Annual Monetary Policy Report
  • House Financial Services Committee: HUD Oversight: Testimony of the HUD Inspector General
  • Senate Committee on Armed Services: Markup of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024

Thursday

  • Senate Banking Committee: The Semiannual Monetary Policy Report from the Federal Reserve to Congress
  • House Financial Services Committee: Oversight of the SEC
  • House Financial Services Committee: Oversight of the SECs Division of Trading & Markets
  • Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation: Nomination Hearings: FCC
  • Senate Committee on Armed Services: Markup of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024

Watching the EPA

In addition, NAFCU VP-Regulatory Affairs Ann Petrossaid the association is anticipating the EPA will release its notice of funding opportunity sometime soon related to its new Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. Credit unions and their partners will then be able to apply.
