Here are Some of the Candidates CULAC is Supporting In Primaries This Week

WASHINGTON–Credit unions are supporting 38 candidates across the five state election primaries that are scheduled for today and Thursday.

Elections are set today in Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, Michigan, Missouri and Washington, while Tennessee will hold its primary on Thursday.

Of those 38 candidates, 36 are incumbents, while there are two open races. In all, the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC) has spent $267,000 on candidates in this week’s elections, according to Trey Hawkins, deputy chief advocacy officer for political action for CUNA.

‘Highly Competitive Races’

Hawkins said there are a number of “highly competitive races.”

CULAC is watching today and Thursday, including:

  • Michigan Third District. CULAC is supporting Republican Rep. Peter Meijer, who is being challenged by Donald Trump-endorsed challenger John Gibbs.
  • Michigan Thirteenth District. In a seat vacated by the retiring Rep. Brenda Lawrence, credit unions are backing State Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo in the Democratic primary. Hawkins called Gay-Dagnogo a long-time supporter of credit unions in the Michigan statehouse.
  • Washington Third District and Washington Fourth District. CULAC has put funds behind incumbent Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler in the third district and incumbent Rep. Dan Newhouse in the fourth district. Both are Republicans. Washington uses a “top two” primary system in which the top two vote-getters advance to the general election, regardless of party.

“Both are credit union friends with challengers from both the left and right,” said Hawkins.

  • Tennessee Fifth District. CULAC is backing Republican Beth Harwell in the primary.
