KANSAS CITY, Mo.–During its’ 2021 Convention & Annual Meeting here, the Heartland Credit Union Association (HCUA) recognized three individuals and more than a dozen credit unions for their support of credit unions.
Recognized were:
Professional of the Year: Dan Engelhard, Mazuma Credit Union
“Mazuma’s chief lending officer, Dan Engelhard is an accessible executive leader, who is positive, poised, and a deep thinker,” the HCUA said. “He sponsors and mentors Mazuma’s Financial Wellness Committee, played a key role in building the CU Change Program that teaches financial wellness concepts, started Mazuma’s indirect lending program and much more.”
Volunteer of the Year: Mike Murphy, West Community Credit Union
“Impressive. Capable. Caring. Those are the words used to described Mike Murphy, board chair of West Community Credit Union,” the HCUA said. “He has volunteered countless hours, advocated for the movement and fiercely supported the credit union difference for 36 years. He has been active in political advocacy, both on the local and national levels.
Hall of Fame: Dave Tate, Together Credit Union
“When Dave Tate was hired as member service manager in the early 80s, Together Credit Union had less than 25,000 members. During his 40 years at the credit union, he made members a priority, and helped grow the organization to 134,000+ members strong,” the association said. “When he retired four decades later as vice president of branch operations, his main focus was still the member.”
Advocacy Awards
The HCUA said its “Take a STAND” award recognizes credit unions for their efforts in advancing the credit union message within their credit union and at their state capitols through the association’s STAND program.
To be considered for the award, credit unions must complete actions like activating their members, making significant contributions to CUPAC and CULAC, and taking the credit union message directly to lawmakers and their members.
