WASHINGTON — At least four other major financial institutions are reporting that the same web addresses that were used to penetrate the country’s largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, were also used to attempt to break into computers at Citigroup, E*Trade Financial, HSBC and ADP.
The FBI discovered the attempted hacks after it began investigating. At least a half-dozen other banks are also believed to be victims or would-be victims whose systems were not breached. JPMorgan has issued a statement saying the hackers were able to obtain some names and e-mail addresses, but it does not believe there has been any theft of funds from the 76-million household accounts with which it has relationships. Federal government officials have said they suspect the hackers are Russian, but no motive has yet to be identified.
