JACKSON, Miss.–HOPE Credit Union, which describes itself as the leading Black- and women-owned community development financial institution, has launched its first internship program in its 28 year history.
The program is for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), with a goal of providing young Black students with financial literacy and address the racial wealth gap.
The credit union said the program, called HOPE HBCU Marketing Outreach Internship, is still open to applicants and currently has interns from six HBCUs: Jackson State University, Alabama State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Southern University at New Orleans, Dillard University, and Philander Smith College.
Goal to Expand Awareness
The program, which launched Aug. 28 and which is to run through Dec. 8, is “designed to expand the awareness of HOPE’s banking services through on campus and online engagement with their broader college community, while giving students an enhanced set of skills, knowledge, and networks in the field of community development finance,” the $560.6-million HOPE CU said.
The credit union added that the internship program builds on HOPE’s long history of collaborating with historically Black colleges and universities to improve conditions for underserved people and places, and the recognition of HBCUs as anchor institutions for these communities.
Additional Sponsorships
HOPE noted it is also the official league sponsor of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC), which includes providing banking services to the conference office and working with GCAC member schools to improve conditions on and around their campuses.
