Group Of Small CUs In California Marks A Milestone

ANAHEIM, Calif.— Nearly 75 people from California’s small credit unions came together here to mark a milestone: the 10th Annual Shapiro Summit.

The one-day meeting marked a decade of get-togethers for CUs that are members of the Shapiro Group, which is made up of small CU leaders in the state and named after Leo H. Shapiro, a San Francisco attorney. Shapiro is often referred to as the “father of the credit union movement in California.”

According to organizers, the all-day discussion focused on using the right tools and strategies to help elevate credit union operations and the lives of credit union members.

“The annual event gives a forum for credit unions $89 million in assets and under to discuss important issues impacting their institutions,” the California and Nevada leagues in a statement.

The meeting also coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Shapiro Group itself.

“We’ve come a long way since 1992 when former League president Dave Chatfield and industry icon Leo Shapiro discussed the unique needs of credit unions under $12 million in assets at the time,” said Diana Dykstra, president and CEO of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues. “What seemed like a simple idea ended up transforming the California credit union landscape—and you are part of it.”

According to the league, this year’s event afforded participants a memorable experience to reflect on why the Shapiro Group was started. In 1992 the League founded the group to cooperatively pool the resources of the credit union community to help small credit unions operate efficiently and effectively.

As a token of appreciation to their commitment in supporting the Shapiro Group, these small credit unions received a special 25th anniversary commemorative coin in honor of Leo Shapiro,
