Google-ly Eyes: Company Targeting Not Just Digital Wallets but Physical Wallets, Too

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.—Google is planning to replace its original Google Pay app with Google Wallet.

And if Google gets its way, the digital wallet will be replacing consumers physical wallets as well, according to 9to5 Google.

“For starters, the Google Pay application already installed on your phone — its icon is a multi-colored ‘G’ followed by ‘Pay’ against a white circular background — will soon become the new ‘Google Wallet’ app,” 9to5 Google reported.

“With this payments push, Google wants to replace and virtualize physical wallets. This is led by credit and debit cards, as well as transit and event tickets, airline boarding passes, loyalty/gift cards, and vaccination records,” 9to5 Google continued. “That, along with virtual car keys and student IDs, makes up the existing set of what can be saved to your phone. Meanwhile, it will integrate with other Google apps.”

For example, when consumers add a transit card to Google Wallet, their card and balance will automatically show up in Google Maps when they search for directions, 9to5 Google stated.

Moving forward, Google Wallet will be home to mobile driver’s licenses and state IDs, though this is highly dependent on the modernization efforts of state DMVs and other local agencies, according to 9to5 Google.
