GoWest CU Association Kicks Off Annual Convention With Message Around ‘Greater Purpose’

SPOKANE, Wash.–The GoWest Credit Union Association has kicked off its MAXX convention here with more than 1,000 people in attendance.

The meeting marks the first time the GoWest association included members of the MountainWest CU Association, with which it had earlier merged. It now serves CUs in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming.

“Credit unions do more than provide financial services to their members; they bridge gaps, propel economic growth and resilience, drive change, help build essential infrastructure across GoWest communities, and give hope for future generations," said President and CEO Troy Stang.

During his remarks, the association said Stang emphasized the importance of credit unions' greater purpose in driving change and stability in communities, noting their unmatched resilience in times of crisis.

‘Far-Reaching Impact’

Stang also highlighted the far-reaching impact of GoWest’s member credit unions, serving nearly 17 million people and small businesses across the region, according to the organization.

"Credit unions shine brightest through their countless stories of financial well-being and community, making an impact that no other institution is designed or capable of doing,” said Stang. “We call it the credit union difference – the not-for-profit cooperative structure that all credit unions are built upon and uniquely calls them to be stewards of their communities.”

One Example of Response

Stang discussed the challenges to the association and how it has responded, included a recent example in which GoWest and Oregon credit unions partnered as advocates on a bill requiring financial education in high school curriculum that was successfully signed into law.

It's an example of  how credit unions can influence policy evolution and enact change, Stang said.

"We remain inspired by the road ahead – the boundless possibilities, uncharted territories, and the ever-changing landscape credit unions are shaping,” said Stang. “The future is bright, and I am honored to stand together alongside thousands of credit union professionals as we fully realize our greater purpose together.”
