ARLINGTON, Va.–Every person in credit unions who works in a supervisory capacity or in HR now has a new issue to deal with: the use of ChatGPT for performance reviews.
It's a challenge for both managers and employees, a new report states.
“The sensitive work of writing your own self-assessment, or reviewing the work of an employee who reports to you, has become so daunting or monotonous that some would rather turn it over to AI,” Axios reported in its update on the emerging issue. “It's been over a year since ChatGPT became a household name and though the excitement over its magic has begun to wane, people are increasingly using it for all sorts of critical tasks. If you ask manager friends, you'll probably find at least one may have taken this shortcut with performance reviews.”
Axios noted that X, LinkedIn and Reddit are chock full of posts from people bragging about using AI for performance reviews, including tips on the words to use as prompts to generate the best reviews.
One Person’s Approach
Stephen Lytle, the assistant vice president of people and culture at Evara Health, told Axios he puts his own meeting notes into ChatGPT along with the person's self-evaluation and feedback he's gotten from other people, and then instructs ChatGPT, "synthesize this into an effective evaluation."
Others have said they turned to ChatGPT and other tools because they don’t believe the reviews actually affect compensation or promotions.
But it’s not a push-a-button-and-be-done solution, managers told the news outlet, noting the reviews can include errors and often need editing.
Addressing ‘Pathologies’
Another person was quoted as saying generative AI can help with the kinds of "pathologies" he sees with performance reviews, which "actually don't produce better performance."
"I try and use this as a thinking tool to help me create a summative piece that is oriented around growth, looking forward, calling out the good,” the person told Axios.
As for those who use AI for their self-reviews, managers cautioned that it’s usually obvious the technology did the work.
