WASHINGTON—The new CUNA chairman made a confession during the GAC Tuesday.
“I need to come clean,” Maurice Smith told the meeting. “So, I might as well just do it—rip it off like a Band-Aid. I am a credit union nerd.”
The new chairman who accepted his position Monday from outgoing Chair Patrick Jury, said he believes his life’s path was clearly aimed toward the CU movement.
“I suppose I was destined to be a credit union nerd. I am absolutely bonkers over credit unions, for what you do, for what you do for your members and your community,” said the CEO of Local Government Employees CU in Raleigh, N.C.
Smith emphasized that he has no agenda as CUNA chair, other than to follow the collective direction of the board, which ultimately takes its direction from credit unions.
“If I have a platform, it’s your platform, your members’ platform and your communities’ platform,” said Smith.
“I confess I am a credit union nerd,” Smith told the audience. “But truth be told, I believe a few of you are CU nerds as well.”
