Frances Gibelyou, CEO of Family First CU, Announces Retirement; Successor Named

SAGINAW, Mich.–Frances M. Gibelyou, who joined what was then Saginaw Municipal Employees Credit Union in 1985 as a teller before eventually rising to CEO, has announced plans to retire from what is now Family First Credit Union.

The $92.7-million credit union has named CFO Janie C. Smith as her successor.

“Fran's tenure with the credit union was more than a career; it was a lifelong commitment to the principles of the credit union movement – a movement built on the foundation of people helping people,” the credit union said in a statement. “Her tireless dedication to this mission has shaped the lives of countless individuals and families within the community. From her early days as a teller, Fran consistently demonstrated her belief in the power of community and service, always striving to ‘make it a great day’ for both members and colleagues.”

‘Serving One Member at a Time’

While serving as head teller and assistant manager, Family First CU said Gibelyou fostered an

environment of collaboration, growth, and excellence.

“Fran's leadership style was defined by her genuine care for everyone she encountered,” the credit union stated. “One of her favorite phrases, ‘serving one member at a time,’ epitomized her commitment to personalized service that transformed the credit union experience for all. Her infectious smile, warmth, and compassion became synonymous with Family First Credit Union and left an indelible mark on everyone she interacted with.”

‘Heart’ of Credit Union

Added Smith, "Fran's impact goes beyond her professional accomplishments; she has truly become the heart of Family First Credit Union. Her legacy will forever be woven into the fabric of our institution, reminding us of the importance of compassion, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to our community."

A retirement celebration will be held at the Kochville branch of Family First Credit Union in Saginaw on Oct. 7.

Smith has had a 26+ year career in financial services  and has been Family First Credit Union's CFO since 2017.
