The Defense Credit Union Council and America’s Credit Unions each commented on the passing of the longest-lived president in American history.
“The Defense Credit Union Council is saddened to learn of the passing of former President Jimmy Carter today. As a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and a distinguished Navy officer, he embodied the highest ideals of duty and commitment before transitioning to a remarkable career in public service,” said Anthony Hernandez, DCUC president/CEO.
“During his presidency, President Carter signed into law the Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act of 1980. This landmark legislation empowered credit unions to expand their offerings with checking and savings accounts and strengthened financial security by increasing deposit insurance from $40,000 to $100,000,” said Hernandez. “We join millions across the nation in expressing our gratitude for his exemplary service and unwavering dedication to the principles of democracy and peace. Godspeed, President Carter.”
ACU President and CEO Jim Nussle called Carter a friend to credit unions, and “someone who lived the ‘people helping people’ philosophy throughout his life in public service and in his beloved community of Plains, Ga. He leaves an incredible legacy of service to humanity, particularly those from marginalized communities. While gone, he remains an inspiration as we all move forward and build on his work.”
