Former Secretary Of State To Address CUNA’s GAC

WASHINGTON–Former U.S. Secretary of State and senator John Kerry has been added to the lineup of speakers for CUNA’s 2019 Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC).

Kerry served as Secretary of State during the Obama administration for four years, and was in the Senate for 30 years representing Massachusetts, including 28 years on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

CUNA’s GAC is scheduled for March 10-14, 2019 in Washington.

“It’s an absolute honor to have Secretary Kerry speaking at GAC,” said Todd Spiczenski, chief products officer at CUNA, in a statement. “His knowledge of the political arena and passion for humanitarian causes make him a natural choice to deliver a powerful keynote address.”

Kerry’s record of political service includes his key role in the Paris Climate Accord, which he signed in 2016, his position on the bipartisan Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction and his groundbreaking diplomatic contact with Iran in 2013, CUNA said. He also served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, returning from service in Vietnam with a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with Combat V, and three Purple Hearts. He is the best-selling author of both A Call to Service: My Vision for a Better America and This Moment on Earth.

“Credit unions have a rich history of supporting Americans through financial education and grassroots community building,” said Secretary Kerry. “Advocacy is a critical component in keeping that spirit of cooperation alive, and I’m thankful for this opportunity to lend my contribution.”
