Former Mail Room Worker at CU Charged With Stealing More Than $5 Million

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A former mail room worker at a credit union here has been charged with stealing more than $5 million.

According to prosecutors, Duane Sikes, 64, who previously worked for VyStar Credit Union, allegedly used stolen checks made out to the U.S. Postmaster to buy millions of dollars in stamps that he later sold for a profit.

Prosecutors have charged Sikes with stealing more than $5.4 million in the scheme.

Sikes worked at VyStar’s corporate headquarters from 1994 to 2017, and in the mailroom when he stole checks from 2007 to 2017, prosecutors alleged. He is to be arraigned on 10 felony counts of mail fraud and five felony counts of embezzlement in U.S. District Court in Jacksonville.

In a statement, VyStar Credit Union said, “Upon our discovery that a former employee had defrauded the company during his employment, VyStar immediately conducted a more comprehensive internal review, reported the matter to authorities and is cooperating fully with their investigation.
