Former Credit Union Attorney Has Gone To The Bankers’ Side

Michael Emancipator

WASHINGTON–A former credit union trade association attorney whose name is known to many has gone to work for the bankers.

Michael Emancipator has joined the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) as assistant vice president and regulatory counsel.  Emancipator most recently served as senior regulatory affairs counsel for NAFCU.

Emancipator will focus on consumer protection laws and regulations under the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s jurisdiction, according to the ICBA, which has been outspoken in its criticism of credit unions and most recently called for congressional hearings on the tax exemption.

“As the driving force behind meaningful advocacy for the nation’s community banks, ICBA is pleased to welcome Michael to the ICBA team as we work to advance community bank policy positions with key federal regulatory agencies and policymakers,” said Viveca Ware, ICBA’s group executive vice president for regulatory policy, in a statement. “Michael’s advocacy experience and ability to affect meaningful change will greatly benefit ICBA and community banks across the nation.”

Prior to joining NAFCU, Emancipator served as an assistant vice president at Callahan & Associates.
