PFLUGERVILLE, Texas–Former CUNA President Jim Williams, who also had a long career leading several credit unions, has died. Mr. Williams was 83.
Williams served as president of Madison, Wis.-based CUNA from 1979-1986, helping to lead the fight to win credit unions the power to offer share drafts during his tenure. Williams was succeeded as CUNA President by Ralph Swoboda.
He began his career in credit unions in 1960, and through 1979 served as the manager of several CUs, as well as serving as president of the Amarillo Chapter of Credit Unions and later as chairman of the Texas Credit Union League.
After returning to Texas in 1988, he served as a credit union consultant, before being named president of Carbide Seadrift Federal Credit Union in Victoria, Texas in 1994. Williams retired from that position.
