Former CU President Pleads Guilty to Embezzling Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars

WATERBURY, Conn.— The former president of a Skyline Financial FCU has pleaded guilty to embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from the credit union, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Tara Kewalis, 50, of Beacon Falls, Conn. stole $254,532 over four and a half years while serving as the president and CEO of the $38.4-million Skyline Financial FCU.

Prosecutors said that beginning around September 2016, Kewalis abused her position to create fraudulent accounts and make fraudulent entries in the credit union’s accounting system. The illegal activity continued until she was fired in March 2021, the office said.

Kewalis has pleaded guilty to embezzlement by a credit union officer or employee and was released on a $50,000 bond pending sentencing, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. She is scheduled to be sentenced on March 1, 2023 and faces up to 30 years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Skyline Financial FCU’s Sept. 30 call report shows it posted a $73,480 loss year to date, with capital of 7.59%.
