Former CU Manager Arraigned on Charges of Stealing Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars Over a Decade

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A former credit union manager has been arraigned on federal charges in connection with a multi-year scheme to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Rita Hartman, 68, the former manager of Muddy River Credit Union, was indicted by a federal grand jury, according to the United State's  Attorney.

According to court documents cited by the JC Post, and other information presented in court, Hartman was the manager of Muddy River Credit Union (formerly Bradken FCU) from the early 1990s through January 2021.

The JC Post report noted Muddy River served the employees of the Bradken foundry located in Atchison, Kan., and that in 2013 Hartman was appointed to the Kansas Credit Union Council, which advises the Kansas Department of Credit Unions.

Decade-Long Theft

From at least 2010 through December 2020, Hartman is accused of using her position to steal money from Muddy River, according to prosecutors.

“Hartman allegedly did so by crediting fraudulent deposits and loan payments to her or her relatives’ accounts or by stealing cash deposits, then concealing her conduct by altering Muddy River’s books and records, and falsifying information submitted to Muddy River’s regulators,” JC Post reported.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the case.
