SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.—Former credit union employee Pete Aguilar (D) has been officially declared the winner of the race to represent California’s 31st congressional district, winning by a slim 51.26% of the vote to rival Paul Chabot’s 48.74% of the vote, or a difference of 2,291 votes.
Aguilar, the mayor of Redlands, Calif., is a former employee of Arrowhead Credit Union, who received substantial support from CUNA’s Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) in the form of $150,000 as an independent expenditure. The funds went to Aguilar despite a wide financial advantage over his opponent. Aguilar raised $1.9 million overall, compared to Chabot’s $428,574.
