Former CU Employee Enters Not Guilty Plea Following Theft Allegations

DECATUR, Ga.–A former credit union employee who has been charged with stealing more than $66,000 from members has pleaded not guilty in Macon County Circuit Court.

Karen S. Buxton, 49, entered the plea after being charged with theft over $10,000, a Class 2 felony for which she could be sentenced from three to seven years in prison if convicted, according to authorities.

The Macon County Sheriff’s Office said Buxton has been charged with stealing the funds from two members of ADM Credit Union between March and November 2016. The affidavit alleges Buxton took more than $31,000 from each of their accounts and spent the cash on dining out and helping family members.

After being confronted by managers, the Sheriff’s Office said Buxton was suspended from her job on Oct. 23, 2017, when it has been further alleged she also took $300 from a cash drawer.

Buxton is free on $10,000 bond and has a pretrial hearing scheduled for Jan. 22.
