Former CU Employee Admits To Embezzling More Than $200K

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.—A former employee of Shelter Insurance FCU faces up to three decades in federal prison after admitting to embezzling more than $231,000 from the Columbia, Mo.-based CU.

Debra Wenger, 62, admitted to stealing the money and waived her right to a grand jury and pleaded guilty in Jefferson City to an embezzlement charge, the Belleville News-Democrat reported.

Authorities say Wenger began working for Shelter Insurance Companies in 1972 and transferred to the now $30-million Shelter Insurance Federal Credit Union in 1988. It's in that job that she was a teller and administrative assistant, assuming all accounting responsibilities, the newspaper stated.
