BELLINGHAM, Wash.— For the first time in its 85-year history, Whatcom Educational Credit Union, better known as WECU, said it is officially expanding out of Whatcom County and across county lines with a new financial center set to open in Mount Vernon, Wash.
WECU said it is already an active community partner in neighboring Skagit County. In 2022, the credit union said it sponsored the Sedro-Woolley Summer Concert Series at Riverfront Park, Downtown Mount Vernon Annual Holiday Parade, and Skagit Home & Garden Show.
The $2.5-billion WECU noted it further collaborated with local school districts to spotlight two high school football games as part of WECU’s Game of the Week series. In 2023, WECU said it “intends to do significantly more, including sponsorship of local events, coordinating staff volunteerism events and charitable giving outreach, and providing academic support to local education-based organizations.”
‘Commitment to Membership’
“This strategic decision reflects our commitment to serving our membership,” said President and CEO Jennifer Kutcher. “Currently, more than 6,800 WECU members live in Skagit County. We are excited to enhance the service they receive and look forward to welcoming new members from the area to WECU. Together, we will continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our members and strengthen the communities we serve.”
The credit union has approximately 152,000 members and employs more than 425 dedicated professionals.
