WASHINGTON—It was “back to school” for advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill Monday, according to CUNA, which reported that 10 leagues representing 15 states met with newly elected members of Congress and those who are returning.
Ryan Donovan said the leagues and CUNA are wasting little time in getting CU advocacy efforts going in the New Year.
NAFCU said it is moving on Capitol Hill, as well,
“NAFCU has hit the ground running,” said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. “We’re on Capitol Hill today speaking with new and returning members of Congress and advancing our 2017 top priorities, which reflect credit unions’ critical issues. As the 115th Congress begins, our advocacy efforts are in high gear to foster a positive legislative and regulatory climate that will allow credit unions and America to succeed.”
The 115th Congress began Monday with the swearing in of members of the House and Senate. But Donovan said Monday’s “pomp and circumstance” will be quickly followed up today with important business.
“As much as Monday was like the first day of school, Tuesday is more like cramming for mid-term exams,” said Donovan about Congressional activity. “Congress has to get ready to work on several priorities, which include some regulatory relief priorities of CUNA.”
Donovan said the House Tuesday was expected to consider the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act (REINS Act), which would require special approval of regulations that have an estimated economic impact of more than $100 million.
“We have, and will continue to encourage members of the House to vote for this bill when it comes up on the floor,” said Donovan.
Later this week the House and Senate will convene a joint meeting to tabulate the electoral votes for the recent presidential election, Donovan added.
