BROOKFIELD, Wis.–Fiserv said it will roll out a cardless ATM solution in 2016. It has been piloting the technology this year at a credit union in Florida.
The “CardFree Cash” technology allows a member to contact their financial institution, and once identity of the member/customer is confirmed, that person is provided with an 11-digit number to enter at the ATM, plus their PIN.
"And now you have access to your account, just as if you had your regular plastic," said David Keenan, senior vice president of network solutions for Fiserv, in a statement.
Fiserv said the solution is one way to help battle ATM card skimmers, which have been vexing financial institutions nationally. Fiserv added, however, it does not project that plastic cards will be replaced anytime soon. Solutions using smartphones at ATMs are also being tested and piloted.
