SAN DIEGO–The first of the two teams that will play in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl has accepted an invitation to participate.
Brigham Young University (BYU) was invited to play in the credit union-sponsored college bowl game following its recent win over Southern Utah and accepted the bid, filling the first of 82 postseason berths available this season.
The Poinsettia Bowl had an agreement in place with BYU (6-4) before the season began to invite the Cougars as long as they were bowl eligible. BYU will meet a team from the Mountain West Conference in the game that is scheduled for Dec. 21 at 6 p.m. PT. Among the teams that could also be invited are Air Force, Wyoming and hometown San Diego State University.
For BUY this will be the 13th local bowl appearance for BYU. The Cougars have played in the Holiday Bowl 11 times and the Poinsettia Bowl once, beating SDSU 23-6 in the 2012 game.
