WASHINGTON–President Trump has announced deal with Congress that will reopen the federal government following a month-long shutdown.
"I am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government," Trump said in remarks from the Rose Garden. "As everyone knows I have a very powerful alternative but I'm not going to use it at this time.
The deal to reopen the government runs through Feb. 15, and does not include any funding for the border wall with Mexico that the president wants and which has been the reason for the impasse.
The agreement comes as more than 100 credit unions have been offering assistance to furloughed federal workers across the country.
In response to the agreement reopening the federal government, CUNA’s chief advocacy officer, Ryan Donovan, issued a statement saying, “It is encouraging to learn that lawmakers have come to a tentative agreement to end the shutdown. We are eager to see these measures come to the floor, and hope this paves the way for a swift resolution to the shutdown that has been affecting the nation for the last 35 days. While we look forward to the rapid restoration of backpay to the hundreds of thousands of families forced into financial uncertainty as a result of this shutdown, America’s credit unions stand ready to support those affected until that time comes.”
