Father, Son Robbery Team Plead Guilty; Ex-Manager Who Tried to Burn Down CU Is Sentenced

DAVENPORT, Iowa—A father and son who opted to bond over robbing credit unions have pleaded guilty to charges here, while in a separate case, a former CU manager has pleaded guilty to five charges.

The Quad-City Times reported that 33-year-old David Denney pleaded guilty in Davenport to three counts of bank robbery and one of conspiracy. His sentencing is scheduled for March 20. His 59-year-old father, Kevin Denney, pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery and one of conspiracy. His sentencing is set for March 19.

Their co-defendant, 32-year-old Cynthia Niebuhr-Hartley, of Muscatine, earlier pleaded guilty to robbery and conspiracy counts. Her sentencing also is set for March 19, according to the Quad City Times.

Documents filed in U.S. District Court say all three were involved in robbing an Ascentra Credit Union office in August 2016 and a Vibrant Credit Union office in November 2016 and again on March 30.

In Aberdeen, Wash., meanwhile, Krista S. Putnam, 38, the former manager of the former Woodworker’s FCU, has pleaded guilty to five counts of first degree theft.

The investigation of events at WFCU began in March of 2016 when police were called to the CU’s office regarding a suspicious fire. Police eventually learned that Putnam started the fire to conceal evidence of her crime from federal investigators who were standing outside the credit union at the time.

Grays Harbor County Prosecutor Katie Svoboda said that in exchange for not pursuing the arson charge, Putnam pleaded guilty to the five charges and further agreed to pay restitution to three members who were victims in the $350,000 theft.
