WASHINGTON–Congress is back in session this week and while a “lot of activity” is expected, what form that activity will take is largely unknown.
The complications include not just the typical partisan politics, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has been diagnosed with Covid, while Sen. Patrick Leahy (R-VT) remains ill, noted Jason Stverak, CUNA’s deputy chief advocacy officer.
The result of that, Stverak added, is he expects the Senate to focus on nominations this week.
Where credit unions will be paying particular attention is the National Defense Authorization Act, different versions of which have passed the House and the Senate and which will go to a rules committee hearing today to hammer out differences.
Stverak noted “hundreds and hundreds and hundreds” of amendments will need to be reviewed before the final bill comes to a vote.
Specific CU Focus
For credit unions specifically, the focus will be on the SAFE Act, which would allow financial institutions to serve cannabis-related businesses and remove the federal violations and which is among those amendments, and language related to providing banks access to military bases equal to that of credit unions.
On the floor of the House the legislative body will be considering bills related to women’s health, abortion and the Active Shooter Alert Act.
Committee Hearings
Among the committee hearings Stverak said CUNA will be watching this week are:
Today
Senate Committee on Banking, Housing Urban Affairs: Advancing Public Transportation under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law: Update from the Federal Transit Administration
Wednesday
House Committee on Small Business Subcommittee: Fintech and Transparency in Small Business
House Committee on Financial Services: Better Together: Examining the Proposed Rule to Modernize the Community Reinvestment Act
House Committee on Oversight and Reform: Protecting Military Servicemembers and Veterans from Financial Scams and Fraud
Thursday
Senate Banking Committee: Advancing National Security and Foreign Policy Through Export Controls: Oversight of the Bureau of Industry and Security
