Faster Payments Council Releases Report On Overcoming QR Code Payment Barriers

WASHINGTON— The U.S. Faster Payments Council (FPC) has published a new report, Overcoming Instant Payment QR Code Impediments to Adoption: Usability, which explores the challenges of implementing QR code-based instant payments at the point of sale and provides insights on overcoming these barriers.

The report, developed by the FPC QR Code Interface Work Group, highlights critical usability factors affecting adoption, including legacy POS system limitations, integration complexities, scanning device compatibility, and network dependency. It also explores how emerging technologies such as SoftPOS can help mitigate these obstacles, enabling broader acceptance of QR code-based faster payments across industries, Fintech Finance News said.

“The adoption of QR code-based instant payments in the United States has lagged behind other markets due to persistent technological and operational challenges,” said Keith Riddle, SVP of business development at Payfinia and FPC QR Code Interface Work Group chair. “This report provides valuable insights into the usability factors that must be addressed to enhance the consumer and merchant experience and accelerate adoption.”

One of the primary issues explored in the report is the lack of interoperability among various QR code presentation formats in the United States. Unlike in other regions where standardized QR code solutions have facilitated widespread adoption, the domestic market remains fragmented. The report underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to establish industry standards that can streamline implementation and improve the user experience, Fintech Finance News said

“Creating a seamless, user-friendly experience for both merchants and consumers is essential for the success of QR code-based instant payments,” said Caroline Serejo Cypriano, co-founder and COO at JJ4Tech and QR Code Interface Work Group vice chair. “By identifying and addressing usability challenges, we can help drive broader acceptance and unlock the full potential of instant payments at the point-of-sale.”

“As instant payment adoption grows, ensuring that QR codes serve as a reliable and efficient point-of-sale solution is critical,” said FPC Executive Director Reed Luhtanen. “This report reflects the work of dedicated industry leaders who are committed to overcoming barriers and creating a more accessible, interoperable, and user-friendly payments landscape.”
