FHFA Director’s Testimony This Week Has The Attention Of CU Trade Groups

Mel Watt

WASHINGTON—Testimony of Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Mel Watt this week is drawing the attention of CUNA and NAFCU.

Watt will testify Thursday at 10 a.m. ET before the Senate Banking Committee on the status of government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. NAFCU and CUNA said they will closely monitor the hearing for any impacts on credit unions seen in planned activities of the FHFA.
“NAFCU remains focused on ensuring equal access to the market for credit unions and fair pricing – based on loan quality, not volume – in connection with any reforms of the housing finance system,” the trade association stated.
CUNA said it will submit a written statement for the record in advance of the hearing.

Other events in Washington this week:

  • The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday will discuss the overall cybersecurity threat landscape in America.
  • The CFPB will live-stream a public field hearing on May 10 focused on small business lending. The hearing is set for 11 a.m. PT in Los Angeles. Both NAFCU and CUNA will monitor the meeting. NAFCU said it will submit a written statement for the record. Credit unions will be represented at the hearing by Sharon Lindeman, vice president of regulatory advocacy for the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues.

The House is in recess this week with lawmakers working out of their home districts.
