FCC Releases Deadline for Service Providers to Share Updated Phone Info

WASHINGTON—The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released a notice announcing the deadlines for service providers to start sharing information with the commission's reassigned numbers database.

Starting April 15, service providers will be required to report permanent disconnections of their subscribers' numbers to the database every 15 days. The initial reporting covered period is July 27, 2020 – when service providers were required to start maintaining records – through April 15.

The FCC in 2018 unanimously approved a rulemaking to create a single, reassigned numbers database to combat illegal robocalls. While the database's implementation has been delayed, the FCC intends for it to be operational by June, stated NAFCU, which has been working with the FCC on efforts to modernize the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) to protect consumers from harassing robocallers while ensuring credit unions and other legitimate businesses can still contact members and consumers with important information.

In December, the Supreme Court held oral arguments in a lawsuit challenging the definition of an automatic telephone dialing system (ATDS, or autodialer) under the TCPA.
