Ex-Employee Created Bogus Fees to Steal More Than $600,000

ALLENTOWN, Penn.–A former credit union employee here has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $600,000.

Julie Ann Turk, 46, pleaded guilty in federal court in Reading, Penn., to one count each of bank fraud and bank embezzlement, and three counts of money laundering.

According to federal prosecutors, Turk worked in a number of positions at Allentown FCU where she had access to the CU’s general accounts and to member accounts. Turk also maintained an account at the credit union in her own name, the Lehigh Morning Call reported.

The indictment states Turk created fraudulent credit union fees, which she removed from the AFCU’s general accounts and deposited in the accounts of six members. She then transferred the money from the six member accounts into her personal accounts. Between 2009 and 2016, Turk stole $641,637 from the credit union and four of the customers, according to the indictment.

Turk is scheduled to be sentenced in June. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 90 years in prison.
