Ex-Employee Admits To Stealing From Dead Member’s Account

Rashaad Tremaine Rembert

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—A former employee of Alliance Credit Union here has admitted to stealing from a dead person’s account to pay for a new car.

According to a report from the Gainesville Police Department, Rashaad Tremaine Rembert, 23, acknowledged that he stole $6,330 from an account of a member who passed away in 2013—first taking $5,030 in September and the two months later transferring another $800 into his relative’s account. He then withdrew another $500 in November while training a new employee, the Florida Independent Alligator reported.

On Dec. 22, he texted the new employee asking if he could transfer $800 from the deceased person’s account to his own. He said the dead person’s bank account belonged to his father who was in prison, the newspaper stated.

The employee attempted to process his request but made an error, which had to be reviewed by a supervisor, according to the police report.

Police arrested Rembert on charges of grand theft and scheming to defraud and obtain property.
