Engaged Couple Of CU Employees Also Engaged In Scam, Police Allege

BROOKFIELD, Wis.–An engaged couple here who work at two different credit unions have been arrested on charges related to a scam that allegedly stole more than $300,000, according to police.

The money was used to purchase drugs, the police say.

Arrested were Anna Chaberek, 32, and Anthony Tourtillott, 30, who have been charged with four counts of theft in a business setting over $10,000. Each count is a Class G felony and carries up to 10 years in prison, according to police.

In March, 2016, Brookfield police were called to Enterprise Credit Union following an exam by state regulators that found discrepancies in accounts managed by Chaberek, according to Wauwatosnow.com. According to a criminal complaint, the two suspects were involved in a scheme that saw Chaberek having Tourtillott cash two checks of $980 at a time beginning in May of 2015.

Police said that Tourtillott said during questioning that Chaberek would give him the checks and have him cash them every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

“Tourtillott said that Chaberek told him that the money was from her savings account,” Wauwatosnow.com reported.
“He went on to explain that he would deposit the checks and then call or text his fiancée, at which time she would lift the hold on the check at Enterprise Credit Union at which time he would make the withdrawal in cash.”

According to the complaint, Tourtillott would use the money to purchase 75 to 80 Percocet pills every Monday, Wednesday and Friday that would be split between the couple.

Police said they later made additional findings at Focus Credit Union in Wauwatosa, where Tourtillott worked as a teller. Analysis showed that Tourtillott’s assigned number had indeed allegedly been used to make check deposits and subsequent cash withdrawals that match with Chaberek’s alleged actions, Wauwatosa.com reported.

Chaberek and Tourtillott are scheduled to make their initial appearance in Waukesha County Circuit Court Dec. 19.

A  Facebook posting said that Tourtillott and Chaberek are in love and engaged to be married.
