DOVER, Del.–An employee of Dover FCU here mistakenly transferred member information files to their personal Dropbox account, according to a letter the credit union sent to its members.
Deb Jewell, DFCU’s director of marketing, said in an email to members, "Please know that this is not a breach and we do not believe that the information was misused or compromised," according to the Milford Beacon.
The credit union stressed in a statement to the media that the incident is not the result of hackers.
"Please know that this is not a breach and we do not believe that the information was misused or compromised," said Jewell in the email, the Beacon reported. "Because it was uploaded to Dropbox, we sent this notification out of an abundance of caution."
The credit union said the files were transferred to the employee’s Dropbox account so the employee could use a home computer for business purposes.
"DFCU hired a computer forensic firm to help investigate the incident. The investigation determined that it was unlikely that any information was accessed by any unauthorized person,” Dover Federal said in its email. “The employee was the only authorized user of the Dropbox account and did not provide the Dropbox credentials to any other individual.”
The transferred information included personally identifiable information.
The credit union did not say whether or not the employee involved is still employed by DFCU, the Beacon said.
