Elon Musk’s White House Tenure Nears End As Government Efficiency Effort Winds Down

WASHINGTON—Elon Musk’s role as a senior White House adviser may soon conclude, along with his ambitious government-cutting initiative, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Politico reported.

President Donald Trump suggested Monday that Musk may soon return to running his businesses full-time, signaling that DOGE’s mission—eliminating tens of thousands of government jobs—may be nearing completion Politico said.

“I think he’s amazing, but I also think he’s got a big company to run, and so at some point, he’s going to be going back,” Trump said of the Tesla CEO. “He wants to. I’d keep him as long as I could keep him.”

Trump’s remarks, made during a White House signing ceremony for an executive order targeting concert ticket resellers, come as public concern grows over the disruption caused by DOGE—coinciding with Tesla’s turbulent performance, Politico said.

Musk, classified as a temporary government employee, is subject to a 130-day service limit, which would end his White House tenure in late May. However, a White House official told Politico in February that there was “no end in sight” for Musk’s advisory role, asserting that he was “here to stay,” the news outlet added.
