WASHINGTON–CUNA, its political action committee and respective state leagues are involved in the various elections taking place across seven states today.
Primaries are taking place in Colorado, Illinois, Oklahoma and Utah, run-offs are occurring in Mississippi and South Carolina, and a special general election is being held in Nebraska’s first congressional district to replace the seat vacated by Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, who was indicted and found guilty of breaking campaign laws.
According to Trey Hawkins, CUNA’s deputy chief political officer, the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC) is backing candidates in each of the 27 races taking place today, 25 of whom are incumbents. Overall, CULAC has spent $175,000 on those 27 races.
Among the races in which Hawkins said CULAC is giving particular attention today:
- In Illinois’ 15th district, CULAC is backing Republican Rep. Rodney Davis. Hawkins said Davis “has been a long-time champion of virtually every credit union priority.” CULAC has sent communications on behalf of Davis to tens of thousands of Republican voters in the district who are also CU members. Davis is running against incumbent Rep. Mary Miller as the result of redistricting.
- In Illinois’ newly created district on Chicago’s north side, which is heavily Democratic, CULAC is supporting State Rep. Delia C. Ramirez.
- In Illinois’ seventh district, CULAC is supporting Rep. Danny Davis in a competitive race.
- In Mississippi, there are two races that are run-offs and CULAC is supporting the two incumbents, respectively: Rep. Michael Guest and Rep. Steven Palazzo. Both are Republicans.
- In Nebraska’s special election to fill the vacant seat, CULAC and the league are backing State Sen. Michael Flood. If elected, Flood would immediately fill the remaining term of Fortenberry, and then also run for-reelection in November’s races.
