WASHINGTON–The National Credit Union Foundation’s Development Education (DE) Program has named its 2017 national award winners.
The winners are:
The 2017 Individual Achievement DE Award Recipient: Brandi Stankovic, managing partner, Mitchell Stankovic, Las Vegas.
According to the Foundation, the nomination form for Stankovic noted, “Brandi’s project for DE was focused on serving the underserved and Brandi wrote and translated educational modules from teller training to core philosophy in Spanish. She provided this education to an underserved market of credit union members throughout the United States and then traveled to Caja Popular in Leon Mexico to volunteer, assisting them in disseminating education to their staff and members.”
In addition, “In 2005, Brandi created the Vida Prospera outreach program with Orange County’s CU in Southern California. Vida Prospera helped the credit union create products and service to reach the needs of the Hispanic Community which led to a transitional account and them accepting Matricular Consular for a key part of the Southern California market. Brandi developed a pay bonus for Spanish speaking staff, advertised in community and religious fairs, translated all materials, and streamlined the products in those branches that were most visited by this community.”
The 2017 Individual Achievement DE Award Recipient: Marlene Shiels, CEO, Capital Credit Union, Edinboro, Scotland.
According to the Foundation, Shiels is being recognized for playing a lead role in starting the UK /European DE programme, programme director for first decade-plus; for assisting in the formation of the African DE programme and mentor and facilitator of the program; for being the first British woman to be elected to the WOCCU board; for receiving the highest award given to any credit union member by the British government, the Order of the British Empire OBE for among other things working with the financially excluded, and for being made an honorary member of the institute of Scottish Bankers for work promoting credit unions, among other accomplishments.
The 2017 DE Cooperative Spirit Award: To the Development Educators of Coastal Credit Union, Raleigh, N.C., for their P&P Style Workshop for Internal Employees and Leaders.
In its nomination, it was noted “The DE group at Coastal took the project on to do their own P&P for the employees of the CU. They build an amazing program and now have done it twice already over two days with a bus transporting the employees to a fantastic camp facility.”
One person explained, “I think the main accomplishment for those involved is really giving the employees that would not get a chance to go to a larger conference or training the opportunity to meet each other and learn the principles in a unique setting. It is a two-day commitment and the DE group does all the training for the program to my understanding. The location is an overnight camp so they made a convincing proposal to cover the additional costs for lodging, food and transportation. They plan to do the next ones back to back so the DE group would be out of the office for four workdays in a row. The first one I believe they had around 50 employees. I think you can count on it as at least 100 hours per DE to pull this off.”
