Deutsche Bank Reportedly Could Pay $14 Billion Penalty

WASHINGTON–The U.S. Justice Department has proposed that Deutsche Bank AG pay $14 billion to settle a set of mortgage-securities probes stemming from the financial crisis.

According to several media reports, the $14-billion figure would rank among the largest ever paid by a bank to resolve similar claims and is well above what investors have been expecting.

According to analysts, people close to the negotiations between Deutsche Bank and the government said any settlement talks are preliminary.

Deutsche Bank is expected to push back strongly against it, the people said, and it is far from clear what the final outcome will be.
