Delinquency Hotspots: WalletHub Maps The Cities Drowning In Credit Card Debt

MIAMI—With the number of delinquent credit card accounts rising by as much as 29% in certain cities over the past year, WalletHub has released an updated report on the Cities Where Credit Card Delinquency Is Increasing the Most.

The report highlights the cities where residents are facing the greatest financial challenges.

Credit card delinquency is increasing the most in Fremont, Calif., as the city’s residents were delinquent on nearly 29% more credit card tradelines in Q1 2025 than Q1 2024, WalletHub said.

“Fremont’s rising delinquency rate may have less to do with new debt and more to do with the growing difficulty of managing existing balances. Residents of Fremont had the 84th-most credit card debt in Q1 2025. Persistent inflation and higher interest rates may be straining household budgets, making it harder for many residents to stay current on payments,” WalletHub explained.

Plano, Texas, had the second-highest increase in credit card delinquency in the past year. Residents were behind on payments for nearly 18% more credit cards in Q1 2025 compared to Q1 2024.

“Plano’s elevated credit card delinquency may reflect deeper issues with financial habits. With relatively high levels of credit card debt and below average budgeting performance, many residents may be overextending themselves relying on credit to fund lifestyles that their incomes can’t consistently support,” WalletHub said.

The number of delinquent credit card accounts in Seattle increased by around 15% between Q1 2024 and Q1 2025, which ranks third nationally.

“Seattle has relatively low credit card debt and has the second-lowest overall delinquency rate across all types of debt, suggesting strong financial management among residents. But any increase in credit card delinquency could be a sign of growing stress in particular populations or of growing expenses straining even well-managed budgets,” WalletHub noted.
