WASHINGTON–The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) has wrapped up its annual conference here.
“DCUC’s 2022 Conference exceeded our expectations,” said Tony Hernandez, DCUC’s president/CEO. “We had so many great speakers that updated our members on topics that really matter to them as they serve their military and veteran members. I’m looking forward to seeing where the conversations we started this week lead us as we continue to work together to do best by our members.”
The event also included DCUC’s fourth class of Crashers and, as part of its ongoing partnership with Filene Research Institute, Filene hosted its Cultivating Innovation and Humanizing Technology forum just prior to the annual conference. DCUC is a sponsor of Filene’s Center for Emerging Technology.
In addition, over the four days of the meeting DCUC members, guests, and sponsors raised $20,000 to support this year’s conference charity, Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA). ASYMCA is dedicated to serving junior-enlisted military service members and their families through unique and specialized programs and services. DCUC is honored to support its mission and grateful for the continued generosity of its members, sponsors, and guests, DCUC said.
Additional Presentations
The meeting also featured:
- Chad Williams, a former Navy SEAL, who shared his experience becoming and serving as a SEAL. “He discussed goal setting, including the importance of aiming small to miss small, and that it is the common man with an uncommon desire that will succeed even in the hardest trials,” DCUC said, noting he received a standing ovation
- Hernandez was joined by NAFCU President/CEO Dan Berger, AACUC’s President/CEO Renee Sattiewhite, and Cornerstone CU League President/CEO Caroline Willard in a conversation that covered the “importance of the credit union industry working together to advance its common mission.”
- Gen. Robert Neller, who served as the 37th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps and who had a long successful career as an infantry officer, shared his lessons in leadership with the audience, discussing the path to leadership and emphasizing that simple does not mean easy.
- Lyn Graft. “Graft is a master storyteller with years of experience capturing industry stories, and he shared his three principles of storytelling: pattern, brevity, and memorability,” DCUC said.
- Meanwhile, lunch with DCUC Crashers is always a “popular event, and this year was no exception,” the organization said. Crashers answered audience questions about their Crash experience and their hopes for the future of credit unions and their careers.
Annual Business Meeting & Board
DCUC held its Annual Business Meeting during which two DCUC board member positions were filled. Bill Birnie, president/CEO, Frontwave CU, was re-elected to the Marine Corps Representative position. Robin Larsen, president/CEO, Cobalt Credit Union, was elected to the open representative-at-large position.
Meanwhile, during its Hall of Honor Dinner, three exceptional individuals were honored: Karl Murphy, FirstLight FCU; William “Bill” Rone, Eglin FCU, and Col. Richard Rothwell, USMC (Ret.), Frontwave CU.
In 2023, DCUC will celebrate its 60th Anniversary at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO, July 31 – August 2, 2023.
“This anniversary will celebrate DCUC’s history, while looking towards the future. DCUC will continue emphasizing technology, the future of financial services, and why the work that defense credit unions do serving our nation’s military is so important,” DCUC stated.
