Deal to Avert Gov't Shutdown Would be Welcomed by CUs

WASHINGTON–Congressional negotiators are saying they have a deal for an agreement in principle that would avert another government shutdown. Specifics of the agreement have yet to be hammered out, with one Democratic aide quoted as saying there is "still a ton of work to do" in order to get an agreement ready for a floor vote.

For credit unions, which are eager to see Congress resolve the funding issue in order to tackle other pending issues, any agreement would be welcome.

“There are four legislative days before the funding resolution expires,” noted Ryan Donovan, chief advocacy officer with CUNA. “Much of the work this week behind the scenes and likely in front of the scenes will be related to funding the government past Feb. 15.”

“That there is still another government shutdown looming is of concern to credit unions,” added NAFCU EVP and General Counsel Carrie Hunt.

Also scheduled to get attention this week in Congress is a resolution directing the removal of armed forces from Republic of Yeman, while the Senate may also consider a bill on natural resource management.

Hearings on Tap

In addition to hearings this week on providing services to cannabis-related businesses and on the nominations of two people for the NCUA board (see separate reporting in CUToday.info), other hearings of interest to credit unions, according to Donovan, include:

  • On Wednesday, the House Financial Services Committee will hold a hearing on homelessness in America
  • On Thursday, a House Financial Services subcommittee will hold a hearing on “The Affordable Housing Crisis in Rural America: Assessing the Federal Response”
